Blog / The Many Faces of Ability at Shepherds College
Every student who walks through the doors of Shepherds College has a unique story, a different set of challenges, and an incredible capacity for growth. While we serve students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), the range of diagnoses, learning styles, and personal strengths makes each student’s journey truly one-of-a-kind.
Understanding the Spectrum of Disabilities
The term IDD encompasses a wide range of conditions, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD), Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injuries, and many more. Each condition presents its own set of strengths and challenges, shaping how students interact with the world, learn new skills, and prepare for independence.
For instance, students with ASD may struggle with social interactions but excel in structured environments where routines and visual learning thrive. Those with Down syndrome often exhibit strong social-emotional intelligence but may need additional time and support to process academic concepts. Students with cerebral palsy might face physical mobility challenges but develop strong problem-solving skills as they navigate daily life in new ways.
At Shepherds College®, we celebrate these differences. Our staff and faculty are committed to understanding each student as an individual, rather than defining them by a diagnosis. By meeting students where they are and empowering them to move forward at their own pace, we help them achieve goals they once thought impossible.
A Uniquely Designed Approach to Education
One of the hallmarks of Shepherds College is our specialized three-year program, which provides a blend of functional academics, career preparation, faith formation, and independent living skills. Our staff employs a variety of teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles. Some students learn best through hands-on activities, while others thrive with visual aids, repetition, or one-on-one instruction.
Take Emmanuel, a first-year student with a hearing impairment. With the help of hearing aids and a microphone system, he engages fully in classroom discussions, demonstrating his enthusiasm for learning. He’s particularly excelling in his Bible class, where he connects deeply with the material.
Then there’s Elise, a student from the Class of 2025, who has autism. She is different than some individuals with autism as she is very social. She thrives by being with her peers and participating in activities. She is a very deep thinker but is unable to communicate those thoughts verbally. Her disability is a motor planning weakness and speaking is a fine motor skill. Elise can express words (and quite poetically!) using a communication aid called a letterboard. One-on-one support is also beneficial to Elise.
Beyond the classroom, students experience real-world applications of their training through Occupational Experiences, social engagement, church participation, and volunteer opportunities. Whether pursuing Culinary Arts, Horticulture, or Technology, each student finds a path that aligns with their abilities and interests.
The Power of a Supportive Community
What makes Shepherds College unique isn’t just the education—it’s the culture of belonging. Students, staff, and faculty create an environment where differences are not just accepted but celebrated.
Social and emotional development are integral to student success. Shepherds College employs tools like the Zones of Regulation to help students understand and manage their emotions. Through structured support, students gain self-awareness, confidence, and the ability to advocate for themselves—essential skills for life beyond college.
Additionally, peer relationships play a critical role in student development. Many students come to Shepherds College having never experienced deep friendships before. Here, they find a community of peers who understand their challenges, encourage their growth, and celebrate their successes. Whether it’s a student using assistive technology to communicate, a peer supporting a friend with mobility challenges, or a group navigating social situations together, the spirit of teamwork is always present.
Redefining Success
For students with IDD, traditional definitions of success often don’t apply. At Shepherds College, success isn’t measured by grades alone; it’s seen in the confidence gained from preparing a meal independently, the excitement of mastering a new job skill, or the pride in advocating for oneself in a conversation.
Success looks different for every student, but the mission remains the same: to equip them for a life of purpose and greater independence. Whether a student dreams of working in a bakery, caring for plants in a greenhouse, or assisting with technology, Shepherds College provides the tools, training, and encouragement to make those dreams a reality.
A Future Without Limits
The unique abilities represented at Shepherds College are a testament to the vast potential within each student. Here, we don’t see limitations—we see opportunities to help students soar.
By embracing the uniqueness of each student, Shepherds College continues to create an environment where every student is seen, valued, and empowered to live a fulfilling life. In a world that often underestimates individuals with disabilities, our students redefine what’s possible every single day.
Ability Takes Many Forms
At Shepherds College, success isn’t a one-size-fits-all journey. Every student has a unique blend of strengths, challenges, and potential. By embracing varied learning styles, personalized support, and a culture of belonging, we help students move toward greater independence, confidence, and purpose—in a way that honors their individual journey.
