Blog / Adopted by Design: Faith, Family, and Technology
Becky’s life is a remarkable testament to faith, family, and future aspirations. From her adoption at age three from an orphanage in Bulgaria to majoring in Technology at Shepherds College®, her journey embodies resilience and determination.
Adopted by an American family, Becky found a loving home in Kansasville, WI, with her parents, Jeni and Richard, and her brother Teddy, who was also adopted from Bulgaria. Becky believes that God chose her to be part of this family, a blessing that has given her a profound sense of belonging and security.
Her educational journey has not been without challenges. In high school, Becky experienced bullying, especially directed at her and other special education students. However, she found solace in her favorite classes—art, choir, and gym—where she could express herself creatively. The support from school staff, like the special education teacher and school psychologist, was invaluable. After high school, Becky attended a program for young adults with disabilities before transitioning to Shepherds College to pursue her passion for technology.
Becky’s decision to major in technology stems from her lifelong interest in electronic devices like laptops, phones, and cameras. Her dream is to work at an Apple Store, where she could use her expertise to help others discover products that enhance their lives. Guided by her faith, she views her career as a way to serve others and honor Christ through her skills. “I want to learn everything I can about computers and cameras so I can teach others,” Becci stated. “I can help other people realize that Technology is fun.”
When faced with challenges, Becky’s faith remains her anchor. She knows that mastery takes time, especially in technology. For example, in photography class, she struggled with the quality of the photos taken with school cameras, preferring the simplicity of her iPhone. However, with encouragement from her peers and instructors, she learned that overcoming these obstacles is part of the learning process—a broader reflection of trusting God’s plan, even when things aren’t easy.
Like many young adults, Becky faces practical concerns as she prepares for the workforce. Transportation is a significant challenge. While potential job opportunities in cities like Milwaukee and Chicago are appealing, the logistics of getting there are daunting. She is weighing her options, considering everything from ride-sharing services to moving closer to job prospects.
Becky has also encountered technical challenges, such as difficulties sending pictures to her mom due to file size limits. Yet, her determination to find solutions, with guidance from her instructors, shines through. By learning to use tools like OneDrive, she is developing problem-solving skills essential for her future career. As her teachers often say, “We love wrong answers!”—a reminder that challenges are opportunities to grow.
Becky’s deep sense of being chosen by God is woven throughout her story. Whether she’s troubleshooting tech issues for her family or pursuing a career at an Apple Store, her motivation is rooted in her faith. She is committed to living out the Shepherds College Key Behaviors—“Work Together,” “Promote Professionalism,” and “Model Christ-likeness”—in everything she does.
From her early days in Bulgaria to her life in Kansasville, from overcoming high school struggles to preparing for a career in technology, Becky’s story beautifully intertwines faith and vocation. Her Christ-like desire to serve others is an inspiration to anyone seeking to integrate their beliefs with their career. With the continued support of her mentors and family, Becky is growing in confidence, trusting not only in her abilities but in God’s plan for her future.
